The village of Polyphant lies in East Cornwall about four and a half miles west of Launceston.

The nearby Polyphant Quarry was mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086. It works ornamental stone, used mainly for tombstones and buildings. Stone from the quarry was largely used in the construction of Truro Cathedral.
Other uses of Polyphant Stone - predominantly blue grey with green patches, and white and brown veins are ornamental, used in sculpture bases. It is easily worked with hand tools and takes a high polish.
