St. Austell Consols lies about two miles southeast of St. Stephen in the St. Stephen Section of the St. Austell Mining District. St Austell Consols lies just to the southeast of Great Dowgas Mine and to the west of St. Austell. Other notable mines nearby include Great Hewas United and Polgooth mines. the mine worked three major lodes. These were: Main Lode, South Lode and Caunter Lode. There were numerous shafts including Dowsons Engine, Young's or Flatrod, Strawberry Eastern, Corner, Youngs Boundary, Strawberry Western, Heaths, Blewitts and Hawkins' Shafts.

St. Austell Consols had a brief write-up in Thomas Spargo's book of 1865 entitled 'Statistics and Observations on the Mines of Cornwall and Devon'. He said '... in St. Stephens, near St. Austell, yielded several kinds of metallic minerals, some of which rarely occur in Cornwall; but the whole were insufficient to meet the expenditure. It was given up about three years ago.

Records of production are: 1,074 tons of black tin between 1854-1862 and 1875-1879. In 1846 it sold 75 tons of 6.75% copper ore, whilst between 1854 and 1863 the mine raised 2.5 tons of 70% lead ore, 34 tons of pyrite, 1.75 tons of arsenic, 128 tons of mixed cobalt and nickel ores and 2.5 tons of uranium ore. Up until 1857 the mine raised 126 tons of 25%-30% nickel ore.
