Portheras Cove

Portheras Cove beach, Cornwall

Portheras Cove lies on the north coast of Cornwall near Pendeen and St. Just in West Cornwall. Situated just to the east of Pendeen Watch lighthouse, the cove and beach are best approached by parking your car at Pendeen Watch Lighthouse and then walking east the half mile or so along the path to the cove.

Often overlooked by the casual visitor, Portheras is seldom crowded and can offer good bathing off the north facing sandy beach. Due to its relatively remote location, Portheras Cove can also be a great place to spot seals.

A private beach with a number of landowners, Portheras Cove was the site of the shipwreck of the MV Alacrity. The Alacrity ran aground at Portheras Cove in thick fog on 13th September 1963. The ship had been en route from Swansea to Brussels with a cargo of Anthracite.

The cargo ship broke up over the years and due to razor sharp fragments lying just under the sand, parts of the beach were deemed out of bounds. In 2004 the beach was largely cleared of these fragments, although winter storms often uncover more pieces of the Alacrity.

Visit the beach with care and some sort of footwear may be advisable. It is dog friendly.
