Porthcew

Porthcew beach, Cornwall

Otherwise known as Rinsey Cove, Porthcew lies on the south coast of Cornwall just to the east of Praa Sands. Not really much of a beach. There is NO SWIMMING here. Rinsey is however a favourite with anglers.

Porthcew is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its geology: The roof zone of the Tregonning-Godolphin granite, of Permo-Carboniferous age, is exposed at Porthcew.

On the cliffs above Porthcew lie remains of Cornwall's mining heritage in the shape of Wheal Prosper, (grid reference SW593270) on Rinsey East Cliff. The mine started operating in 1860 possibly as an extension of Wheal Trewavas mine, 800m to the east on Trewavas Cliff (grid reference SW600265). The mine is on the southern end of the Tregonning granite within the Wendron Mining District. By the time Prosper closed in 1866 it had produced mostly tin and a little copper from the Porthcew lode. By the way, the prominent house on Rinsey Head was once the mine's count house (offices).

The area also lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
