Porth Sawsen

Porth Sawsen beach, Cornwall

Also known as Porth Saxon or Cow Beach, Porth Sawsen is a south west facing beach situated about a mile southwest of Mawnan Smith, on the north shore of the Helford River.

The beach consists of small flattened pebbles with a little bit of sand with the main feature being a small boathouse and slipway. The coast path passes behind the beach and continues along the low cliffs west to Durgan and Helford Passage or southeast to Porthallack Beach and Toll Point.

Porth Sawsen beach is seldom crowded and is ideal for family picnics and safe bathing on a rising tide. Porth Sawsen has a good reputation with anglers and snorkelling along the shore can be good given the right conditions.

The beach belongs to the Carwinion Estate and is best accessed via the gardens of Carwinion House on the outskirts of Mawnan Smith. Some parking is available on the roadside; with a track leading the half mile or so down to Porth Sawsen.

There are no facilities at Porth Sawsen or Porthallack although they are both dog friendly.

Please Note: The boathouses and slipways on both beaches are private property.
