Pentewan Sands lies on the south coast of Cornwall near St. Austell.
Privately owned, Pentewan offers a half-mile wide expanse of sand backed by a large caravan park.
South-east facing, the rectangular beach is quite level and sheltered by cliffs at either end. At the northern end of the beach the remains of a harbour can be seen - now clogged with silt - it hasn't been used since the 1940's
The beach can be very busy in season due to its proximity to the holiday camp and also the resorts of Gorran Haven and Mevagissey.
Safety equipment is located behind the beach and is provided by the Holiday Camp. There is no lifeguard cover but the owners of the beach designate safe areas for swimming, bathing and water craft during the summer. Swimming is safe unless indicated otherwise.
A seasonal dog ban operates at Pentewan with dogs only permitted on the beach on weekdays between November 1st and the middle of March and from 8am to 4pm.
Pentewan Sands is a great place to use as a base to visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan, as well as Mevagissey, Gorran Haven, St Austell and the Eden Project.
