A tiny beach of grey sand and pebbles nestling below Tintagel Castle, Merlin's Cove is really part of the larger Tintagel Haven beach.
There is a small cave here reputed to be the birthplace of Merlin! The area above the beach is, like the rest of the coast around here, prone to erosion and access to the beach cannot always be guaranteed.
On level ground behind the cove is the Tintagel Castle Visitor Centre and The Beach Café. The café has seating indoors and out and serves Cornish cream teas, crab sandwiches, hot and cold drinks, and proper Cornish Pasties as well as locally caught fish and chips and home-made stews.
The nearest car park is in Tintagel village about 600 metres away up a quite steep path. There is a fine Visitor Information Centre here with a wide range of books and leaflets on Tintagel and surrounding area and this should be one of the first places on your itinerary if visiting this part of North Cornwall.
Apart from the obvious attraction of the Castle, Tintagel offers much to interest the visitor including the King Arthur's Great Hall and the excellent King Arthur Bookshop; St. Materiana's Church; The Old Post Office and Rocky Valley.
There are good walks northeast along the coast over Barras Nose to Willapark, Bossiney and eventually Boscastle; or southwest passing Dunderhole Point, the Youth Hostel and Penhallic Point to Hole Beach and Trebarwith Strand.
