Loe Bar lies just to the southeast of Porthleven, near Helston on the south coast of Cornwall. South west facing Loe Bar consists of a mixture of coarse and fine shingle, the beach or bar separates the freshwater lagoon of Loe Pool from the sea. From Loe Bar the shingle becomes more flinty in nature as it runs the three miles or so southeast to Gunwalloe.
The area around The Loe and Carminowe Creek offers a special habitat for plants and insects and there are a number of viewpoints around the pool suitable for bird watching.
There are excellent walks around the perimeter of Loe Pool in the Penrose Estate and also along the coast northwest to Porthleven or southeast to Gunwalloe Church Cove, Poldhu Cove and Mullion.
The beach is not suitable for swimming and even just entering the water is not advised as there are extremely strong currents just offshore.
Families are better advised travelling to Porthleven Sands or to Gunwalloe Church Cove.
